General Information

Senegal, located at the westernmost point of the African continent Senegal is known as the “Gateway to Africa. Senegal is where semi-arid land, rainforest and ocean meet. This results in a wide variety of plant and animal life. It is from this rich natural heritage that the country’s national symbols were chosen: the baobab tree and the lion. Senegal nearly surrounds the whole of The Gambia, a country occupying a narrow sliver of land along the banks of the Gambia River, which separates Senegal’s southern region of Casamance from the rest of the country. Most tourists from outside Africa are Europeans, especially the French, staying at enclosed beach resorts. For overlanders there is a choice of national parks such as Langue de Barbarie, Niokolo Koba National Park, Basse Cassamance National Park, Saloum Delta National Park, Djoudi Bird sanctuary and Guembeul Natural reserve.
